Call for Proposals

Present your Best Ideas. Phase II of CfP Deadline: Friday, June 26th 2020.

The Call for Proposals is open. If you have an engaging, technical talk on a topic you would like explored at GIDS, and wish to speak at the summit in Sydney (Oct 19-21) and/or Melbourne (Oct 21-23), we would love to hear from you. We are looking for fresh/new content or talks that have not been presented before an Oceania audience. To submit to the CfP, please fill out the form.

GIDS brings together thousands of highly motivated and activated attendees across five days. It is the largest event of its kind in the region.

You will meet with a diverse community of software practitioners and top-level technical decision makers, who want to experience the latest technologies, pick up actionable tips and best practices, connect with technical experts, and understand strategies to hire and grow great engineering teams, improve developer culture and related subjects.

This year, the focus of the summit is on improving the implementation of technology amidst the transformations in programming languages, modern web, cloud and infrastructure, data, AI and ML, software architecture and methodology, as well as addressing key challenges of technology leadership. We aim to bring together the most passionate technologists along with new, interesting people to showcase how software practitioners are using tools and technology to solve their challenges and are building great engineering teams.

NOTE: We realize every speaker has her own strengths, but we love proposals for talks that involve live coding, practical demos (that work) and no-slides (if possible). Most importantly, we are seeking proposals for talks that are inspirational, experiential, impart wisdom and sheer value that our attendees can immediately put to use at work. If you think your talks will be purely vendor-driven and/or will include sales plugs, please know that we have many other avenues available for promotion and participation.

* We respect the time and effort you have put into submitting a proposal for GIDS AU 2020. Regardless of the outcome, we will contact you with a decision latest by 03rd July 2020.

* Proposals are reviewed as we receive them, so if you submit a particularly compelling proposal, don't be surprised if we confirm and publish your talk and details well before the deadlines noted above.

Steps to Submit your Proposal(s)

Step 1: Identify a topic that is relevant to the GIDS audience: they are technical, professional, and very smart. GIDS places emphasis on original presentation ideas that focus on real-world scenarios, relevant examples, and knowledge transfer. Click here to view a list of tracks and the expected coverage in each track.

Step 2: Carefully read the GIDS CfP submission guidelines:

  • Fresh/New Content - we are looking for fresh/new content or talks that have not been, or will not be, presented before an Oceania audience prior to the event date. There are a few exceptions to this rule, but in general we would like to field new material on the GIDS agenda. We realise it's not easy to come up with new ideas. If you have a talk that you've given elsewhere, please explain in your proposal in detail what is different from the last time you presented the topic. Please also modify the title and description to clearly reflect the new angle/approach/material.
  • Submitting Multiple Proposals - we typically receive a huge volume of talk proposals at GIDS, so proposing a mix of long, short and flash talks provide our technical reviewers a choice of proposals and will brighten your chances of making the cut.
  • Proposals are preferred from independent speakers who are not associated with an organization that has marketing interest in GIDS. Product-agnostic talks attract a larger crowd and are much better received by our attendees. Presentations are not a sales/vendor pitch, although you are welcome to have a slide or two about yourself and your company. For vendor representatives and evangelists responding to the CfP, there is clearly no scope for marketing pitches, product plugs or any reference whatsoever to their organisation's products or service offerings. Sponsored talks are permitted through conference sponsorship, for details please write us.
  • Estimated presentation length - there are four types of presentations - Long Talk (50 mins), Short Talk (25 mins), Flash Talk (10 mins) and Workshop (360-, 180-, and 90-mins). Submission of final presentation decks to the conference chair is required on or before 05 October 2020, to enable publication of the conference proceedings.
  • Complimentary Pass - one presenter per selected presentation is eligible for complimentary full conference registration to the event, which includes admission to the exhibit hall and conference (general & break-out sessions), event material, luncheons, coffee/refreshments. Speaker pass is valid for the main conference days. Pre/post-conference workshop days are not included in the speaker pass. You are welcome to propose a talk with more than one speaker; please be aware that if accepted, complimentary ticket for the co-presenter will be issued provided the selected session is a long talk, half- or full-day workshop. Please note GIDS does not offer travel & accommodation assistance to co-presenters.
  • Tickets for Co-speakers and Companions - additional passes for your co-speakers and companions (up to a maximum of 5) are available at a discounted price until 31st March 2020 or before seats are sold out (whichever is earlier).
  • Travel & Accommodation Assistance - GIDS will reimburse the cost of airfare (coach class) and book hotel accommodation for International and Interstate speakers. T&E budgets are not available for proposals received in Phase 2 of the CfP.
  • Once the abstract has been submitted through the submission form (below), an automatic email response will be sent to confirm receipt. Please retain the email for your records.
  • All conference proceedings at GIDS 2020, including audio, video, photo and text transcriptions, recorded and published by the organiser are licensed for distribution under our Creative Commons license, Attribution–Non Commercial–No Derivatives (or the CC BY – NC – ND 4.0 International) which means it may be shared by following a few requirements. Photographs or videos taken by or on behalf of the organiser may be posted on one or more of our sites/social media channels and/or used in future marketing materials. Attendees are also encouraged to amplify GIDS by sharing their experiences through photographs, short videos (less than one minute) and text on their social media. It is possible your photograph, video or reference might appear in such content/context. If you have a concern, we invite you to directly speak to the photographer/videographer. Attendees are not permitted to record or broadcast talks at GIDS.
  • Diversity and inclusivity - all speakers will be expected to have read and adhere to the Code of Conduct. In particular for speakers, kindly note slide contents and spoken material should be appropriate for a professional audience including people from different backgrounds. Sexual language and imagery is not appropriate, and neither is language or imagery that discriminates or offends people based on race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, physical appearance, disability or body size.
